Dolphin Defenders UK was initially started as a Facebook group to keep members informed about all things dolphin, focusing on the plight of dolphins in captivity and those involved in the Taiji drive hunting seasons.
Since then, we have organised protests against the dolphin slaughter in London, and held small stalls in different areas in the UK to raise awareness.
2016/2017 Drive hunt season, our founder travelled to Japan, to bare witness to the drive hunts in Taiji, to document and photograph the horrors that happen. We visited Japanese Aquariums and Dolphinariums to document the conditions the cetaceans are being kept in, and to also find out where Taiji's dolphins primarily end up. We also shared the link for 'The Cove' with over 1000 Japanese people, and distributed leaflets in both English and Japanese.
We hope to continue to educate and speak to Japanese individuals and learn about their culture and help them understand that these sentient beings cannot continue to be captured and killed by these fishermen, by highlighting the conditions captive cetaceans are kept in along with exposing the slaughter of dolphins and small whales in the infamous cove, Taiji. We will return to Japan 2017/2018 during the drive hunt season to continue our work.
Our goals are to keep educating people in large numbers, and help bring an end to the slaughter of dolphins in Taiji and around Japan. To do so we rely mainly on donations, this helps us provide people with educational leaflets, information cards, equipment and any travel expenses needed to do so, our fundraisers are transparent and we offer a list of receipts on our blog.
As a small group, we enjoy working together with organisations to bring attention to the atrocities committed against cetaceans, and are happy to be contacted at any time to attend demonstrations, help organise, or offer information.
We are currently collecting footage and information from Dolphinariums around the world and footage of wild and captive cetaceans, if you have any original footage to offer, please do not hesitate to contact us, by simply clicking contact and filling in the message form. We will do our best to respond as soon as possible but please bare in mind that our admin team is small.
Dolphin Defenders UK are happy to help you organise a protest, by offering assistance, advising and we are soon to be offering a downloadable resource pack, this will include flyers, information cards, printable protest cards and banners. Please contact us if you require any of these resources.
